About Europe at Home
The only systematic ranking of North American cities by European character.
The Mission
Millions of North Americans want the experience of European cities — cobblestone streets, walkable neighbourhoods, café culture, old-world architecture — without the transatlantic flight. We built Europe at Home to answer one question honestly: which cities actually deliver that experience, and by how much?
Not "has a European vibe" according to tourism boards. Scored, compared, and ranked against real European cities using objective measurements.
How the Scoring Works
Every city receives a match score (0–100%) calculated across three dimensions:
- 40% Vision AI— street-level imagery compared against a reference dataset of European cities using computer vision models
- 30% Street Topology— intersection density, block length, and street curvature measured from OpenStreetMap data
- 30% Amenity Density— walkable density of cafés, restaurants, shops, and public transit stops per km²
The Dataset
Our base dataset covers 56 North American cities, each matched against a specific European twin. The dataset is updated regularly — new cities are evaluated and added via our AI pipeline, and community members can submit photos for new candidates.
All scores are recalculated from scratch when methodology improves. We don't adjust scores to fit narratives — if a city scores lower on an update because the model improved, we publish that.
Who We Are
Europe at Home is an independent project built by a small team of developers, travellers, and geography nerds. We don't have a PR department, a tourism board relationship, or affiliate obligations to rank certain cities higher. The data ranks them.
